The engine evaluates each repeat group individually — considering the number of options, how the study is structured, and what works best for the raw data output. Different groups in the same questionnaire may use different formats.

Automated Repeat Loop

True begin_repeat driven by a prior select_multiple. Adapts automatically per respondent. Best for large or variable lists.

Brand-Fixed Group Loop

Each brand gets its own permanently fixed group that appears conditionally when selected. Best for brand equity tracking, retail audits and competitive benchmarking.

Sequential Positional Loop

Fixed unrolled slot groups — enumerator picks one brand per slot. Already-selected brands are excluded from subsequent slots. Best for product testing, sensory evaluation and ranked preference studies.

Enumerator-Controlled Single-Pass Loop

No fixed choice list — the enumerator types each item's name on the spot, then answers the detail questions for it, one item at a time via ODK's native "Add Group" prompt. Best for open-ended lists like crops grown, assets owned, or field observations.

Enumerator-Controlled Roster Loop

True two-pass roster — all item names are entered first, then a second pass asks the detail questions for each one. Best for household-member-style rosters where the full list matters before any details are collected.
